North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State
University invites applications and nominations
for the position of General Counsel. Due to the
increased demands on our legal staff, we wish to
improve the efficiency of the Legal Affairs
department by adding an experienced lead
attorney to the office, thus increasing the
staff to two (2) attorneys, one paralegal and
one secretary. This is a Cabinet-level
position, which is a direct report to the
chancellor.
An 1890 Land Grant University located in
Greensboro, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The General Counsel serves as the chief legal
advisor to the chancellor, Board of Trustees and
University senior administrators and other
University employees, providing legal advice and
counsel on all matters affecting the legal
rights or obligations of the University. The
General Counsel reports directly to the
chancellor and is a member of the senior
administrative Cabinet. The General Counsel
will represent the University, in coordination
with the Attorney General of North Carolina, in
litigation as well as any other administrative
proceedings to which the University is a party.
The General Counsel will represent the
University administration in faculty,
non-faculty and student dispute resolution,
grievance and due process proceedings, manage
the University trademark-licensing program, and
serve as governmental relations liaison with the
state and local government. The General Counsel
serves as the liaison with the office of Legal
Affairs in the University of North Carolina
General Administration as well as with the North
Carolina Ethics Commission. In addition, the
General Counsel is responsible for oversight and
compliance with all laws and policies governing
ethics and conflicts of interest and with Equal
Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative
Action, Research, and Athletics functions. The
General Counsel supervises three (3) staff
members.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an earned
Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school,
and a minimum of five years’ experience in a
senior legal position in the public sector
and/or higher education and experience in
intergovernmental relations and legislative
affairs is preferred. Candidate must be licensed
to practice law in North Carolina or be able to
become licensed within one year after the date
of appointment. Applicants should have
demonstrated ability to conduct legal research
and analysis in a broad spectrum of state and
federal legal issues affecting higher education,
including tort law, patent law, human resources
law, worker’s compensation and occupational law,
et cetera. Other desirable qualities include
strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills, an
awareness of issues in diversity, superior oral
and written communication skills, ability to
manage and prioritize a large and varied
workload, and an established reputation for
honesty and integrity. A successful candidate
will demonstrate the ability to provide
leadership and direction for the legal staff.
