for the position of Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
reports to the Chancellor and is a member of the
Chancellor’s executive cabinet. North Carolina
A&T State University, a Doctoral, Research
Intensive University (High Research Activity) is
one of 17 institutions in The University of
North Carolina System and is a public,
comprehensive institution granting
undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees.
Academic programs are offered through eight
Schools/Colleges; Schools of Agriculture and
Environmental Sciences, Business and Economics,
Education, Nursing, Technology, Graduate
Studies, and the Colleges of Engineering and
Arts and Sciences. The University enrolls over
10,500 students and employs approximately 2,170
faculty and staff. The programs administered by
the Division of Student Affairs are designed to
ensure student successful transitions throughout
the total collegiate experience by working to
seamlessly connect and coordinate the efforts of
various student service units (Career Services,
Counseling Services, Police and Public Safety
Administration, Student Health Services, Housing
and Residence Life, Student Development/First
Year Experience and Orientation, Greek Life,
International Students and Scholars, Campus
Ministry, Trio Programs, Veteran and Disability

The office of the Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs is operated to advance the learning,
intellectual capital, and personal growth of
students by providing strategic management,
leadership and vision for programs, services and
opportunities, which will enable students to
succeed in and contribute to a diverse community
and global society. Additionally, students are
provided the opportunity to develop into a whole
and well-rounded person by fostering a positive
learning community through student participation
in policy decisions, university committees, and
the judicial process, thus ensuring equitable
treatment for all students.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs will
serve as the chief student affairs officer and
the chief student advocate of the institution
and reports directly to the Chancellor. The
successful candidate will lead and manage all
aspects of student affairs administration for
the University. Primary duties and
responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Providing leadership and creative vision to
a complex division that honors and
celebrates diversity and encourages student
success and active participation in the
University community.

Serves as the chief administrator for all
student life-related priorities in the
campus strategic planning process and work
closely with Academic Affairs in the areas
of recruitment, orientation, admission,
retention and graduation.

Responsible for the development of policies
and procedures for the division that are
efficient but also protect the welfare and
interest of students.

Management of a large portfolio with
significant resources aimed at promoting
student success
Ensuring that career services, mentoring
programs, personal counseling, resident
life, campus life and related student
service programs are fully operative,
managed and supportive of students.

Responsible for various university
initiatives, including the Assessment of
Community Services, Student Leadership
Opportunities, Health and Campus Safety
Initiatives, and Civic and Service Education
Programs (CASE).

Represents the University’s student interest
with other institutions, students,
communities and public entities.
-
Advises and supports the activities of the
Student Government Association.
-
Promotes the effective use of technology as
it relates to communication strategies for
student affairs.
-
Enhancement of out-of-classroom
opportunities for students by providing
formal and informal experiences, leadership
development, and support for campus student
organizations.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have a
compelling vision of the future of higher
education with regard to the academic,
development and career needs of students. The
candidate should have the ability to foster a
value-added educational experience for students
that transcends the classroom; the ability to
advance new approaches to serving students
through enhanced use of technology and other
innovations. Most importantly preferred
candidates should possess the personal
attributes necessary for fostering strong
relationships with students. Specific
qualifications include:

Preference for candidates
possessing five to seven years experience as
a senior administrator in higher education
student affairs.

A Master’s degree is
required; a Ph.D. is preferred.
-
Candidate must have
excellent written and verbal communication
skills, effective organization, budgetary
and administration skills.
-
Must show demonstrated
evidence of ability to work both
independently and as a team member.
-
Demonstrated commitment
to student learning and promoting an
understanding of the value of diversity.
-
Must show evidence of leading large-scale
change initiatives and the ability to
actively, and effectively engage in
collaborative fundraising
-
Working knowledge of
contemporary issues and approaches in higher
Education student development.
-
Evidence of an
understanding of the legislative,
regulatory, and public policy issues
impacting higher education.
-
Experience with a
University System-or comparable teaching and
research institution—is highly desirable.
