Department/Program Overview:
The College of Arts and Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University invites applications and nominations for the 12-month, tenure-track (as 9 month faculty)  position of Chair of the Department of English at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

An 1890 Land Grant University located in Greensboro, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T State University enjoys a long-standing national reputation in learning, discovery and engagement.  With a student body in excess of 10,000 and faculties of 450, A&T offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through its eight schools and colleges in addition to certification and certificate programs.  The University, one of the sixteen constituent units of The University of North Carolina (UNC), is doctoral/research intensive and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  The strategic vision of Uncompromising Excellence focuses the University on interdisciplinary scholarly activities in a learner-centered environment. 

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences typically enrolls over 180 undergraduate and 19 graduate majors and currently has 16 tenured or tenure-track faculty.  The Department’s  undergraduate degrees are the Bachelor of Arts in English, Bachelor of Arts in Speech, and the Bachelor of Science in English, Secondary Education.  The Department’s two graduate degree programs are the Master of Arts Degree in English and African American Literature and the Master of Arts in Teaching (English Education).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Arts and Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University seeks an imaginative and inspiring chair, who possesses a distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments, appreciates the integration of learning, discovery and engagement, and has significant administrative experience.  Candidates are expected to exhibit a strong commitment to scholarship and excellence in the arena of English and to exhibit an open and collegial style of communication.  Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline.    Experience in fund raising is expected.  Among the responsibilities of the chair are the administration of instructional programs, budgetary management, faculty development, instruction, academic advising, and departmental assessment and accreditation functions.  As the academic leader and chief administrative officer of the Department of English, the chair reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. in English or other appropriate discipline and an established record of research and publication.
