Department/Program Overview:  
The School of Education is one of eight schools/colleges at North Carolina A&T State University. The School of Education is a learning centered organization that, through its three departments, prepares a variety of educators and human services professionals and supports their continuing professional development. Building on our historically Black university (HBCU) legacy of exemplary teaching and scholarship, as well as effective public service, we offer degrees at the baccalaureate and master’s levels. Our graduates are catalysts for learning and leading in diverse contexts who engage in collaborative practice with key stakeholders from local to global communities.

The mission of the Department of Human Performance & Leisure Studies (HPLS) is to prepare recreation administrators and sport science professionals who serve as: (a) catalysts for learning, with a comprehensive knowledge base; (b) decision-makers who are able to choose and use the most effective strategies to meet needs of candidates or clients; c) practitioners able to apply their theoretical knowledge in a variety of practical settings. In addition, the HPLS provides a variety of lifetime activities for the university studies (general education) program. The vision of HPLS is to continue to evolve as a leader in developing professionals who are well-prepared and are sensitive to changes in technology, are receptive to diversity, and are able to meet health and fitness needs of a changing population at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department Chair reports to the Dean and serves as the chief administrative and academic leader for the department. He or she is expected to provide visionary leadership and strategic management to foster excellence in the operations, productivity, and continued improvement of functions associated with the Department as well as the School. The Department Chair is responsible for providing administrative leadership for an academic unit that includes 14 full-time faculty members, and approximately 166 undergraduate students majoring in sports science, with concentrations in sports science management, leisure studies, and pre-physical therapy. The Department also has graduate programs at the master’s level. Duties and responsibilities include: faculty and staff development; management of curricula; building interdisciplinary collaborative programs; strategic planning; sustaining existing strong educational programs; significantly expanding departmental research activities; fundraising; budgetary management; fostering strong relationships with corporate and government agencies and the professional community; implementing strategies to increase recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of students. This is a 12-month position at the professor or associate professor level.

Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in an academic discipline within the HPLS.  Demonstrated excellence in leadership and administration preferred. A minimum of five years experience in an administrative and/or teaching position at the university level. Candidate must also have a strong record in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The Department Chair should be an open and effective communicator, with an ability to build cooperation and consensus among diverse disciplines. The candidate’s academic credentials should provide evidence of the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty and administration of the School and University as well as other constituent groups and partners both within and outside the university. The Chairperson must have a strong commitment to student achievement and faculty scholarship.
