Department/Program Overview:
The North Carolina A&T State University’s Center of Excellence for Post Harvest Technologies (COEPHT) at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), Kannapolis, North Carolina, invites applications and nominations for a lead scientist, 12-month tenure-track, position of Assistant or Associate Research Professor of Food Science/Functional foods and bioactive phytochemicals, with focus on fruits and vegetables. The Center is searching for qualified, innovative, visionary, energetic, highly-motivated, candidates with group leadership abilities to take the lead in a vigorous research program on functional foods and their role in health maintenance and disease prevention as to fulfill the vision of the NCA&T-COEPHT to become a premier Center of excellence in interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary post-harvest technology research, outreach, and technology transfer. The successful candidate is expected to work in a collaborative team environment and will be appointed to a faculty position in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

 
The Center of Excellence for Post-Harvest Technologies (COEPHT) was established at North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in 2005 as a research unit of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, (SAES) at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina.  The primary focus of this Center is to provide an infrastructure for multidisciplinary research programs for post-harvest technologies with focus on fruits and vegetables.

 The North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) is a developing public-private partnership involving David Murdock (Owner of Dole Foods Company, Castle and Cooke, Inc.), North Carolina A&T State University, UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro, North Carolina Central University, Duke University, and the North Carolina Community College System to create and sustain a world class nutrition-related biotechnology research park in Kannapolis, NC.  This $1.5 billion facility is being built on a 350 acre campus, site of the former Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, NC. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary role of the Assistant or Associate Professor of Food Science/Functional Foods and Bioactive Phytochemicals is to develop and lead a vigorous research program in the identification, characterization, and development of functional foods for health maintenance and disease prevention, especially their interaction with gene and metabolic processes. The lead scientist responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
 

1.   Lead the Center efforts to conduct research and develop research proposals on value-added post-harvest technologies aspects of functional foods and health as to secure extramural funding from federal, state, and private sponsors.

2.   Manage research projects including supervision of research groups, coordination with external collaborators, planning and execution of research projects in a timely manner, and compliance with research requirements.

3.   Disseminate research findings through publication in peer reviewed scientific journals, policy magazines, popular media and other public forums.

4.   Work synergistically with research faculty located on the main campus of North Carolina A&T as well as NCRC partners

 

Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. in food sciences, nutritional biochemistry, nutrigenomics or closely related fields from an accredited university.
2. A minimum of 5 years of professional and research experience in functional foods/bioactive compounds and food product development. Research/training experience in nutrigenomics and/or metabolomics is a plus as is prior experience in research and development on fruits and vegetables. Professional experience should clearly demonstrate the ability to motivate, lead, and/or supervise the activities of others. Research experience is exemplified by demonstrated ability to attract competitive extramural funding and undertake a broad-based multi-disciplinary research program, a distinctive publication track record in relevant areas, and excellent oral and written communication.
3. Excellent analytical and mathematical skills with propensity to pay attention to details.

Salary: The appointment will be a 100% research appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor with administrative responsibilities. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with professional education, experience, and demonstrated abilities.
