Title: 4-H Extension Agent

Department/Program Overview:
Gates County is a rural northeastern county with a current population of approximately 11,602. The county seat is Gatesville. The county enjoys an abundance of natural beauty. The economy is based on agriculture. The population consists of 58% Caucasian and 42% African-American. Nearly 19.6% of the population is classified as living in poverty. Children under 18 make up 24% of the population. Gates County's comprehensive 4-H program involves youth in a variety of traditional and non-traditional 4-H programs, clubs, special interest, school enrichment, school age childcare, leadership activities, overnight retreats, overnight camping, science and technology, youth at risk issues, health and wellness and life skills development.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan, implement and supervise quality educational programs to address the high priority needs and issues confronting the limited income residents of Gates County’s public housing and related communities Special focus is to concentrate on youth experiencing problems, families in crisis situations and strengthen communities to support youth and family needs. Network and collaborate with systems in and outside the greater public housing communities, i.e. health department, Planned Parenthood, and 4-H and public housing. Additionally, involvement with community volunteers and collaboration with local schools and community groups are required.

Qualifications:
Two years experience in fiscal management, grants writing, management, and supervision preferred. Possess a high degree of subject matter competence, effective oral and written communication skills, computer proficiency, effectively manage time and multitask, a team player, have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Education: Bachelors in youth and or human development, business, or Ag. Extension.  Masters degree preferred but not required.

All Extension Agent positions require: a Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in the major field of study (based on a 4.0 scale), or completion of a Master's degree; a personal automobile and valid driver's license; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. For all Extension Agent positions, a Master's degree is preferred.

Successful candidates for Agent positions will receive one-year fixed term appointments for program responsibilities; and successful candidates for County Extension Director positions will receive one-year fixed term appointments for program responsibilities and "at-will" appointments for administrative responsibilities. The term appointments are subject to renewal in accordance with North Carolina State University policy.
