Temporary Employment
The Department of Human Resources will assist the requesting
department with securing temporary employees to accommodate
workloads created by vacations, vacant positions, increases in
workloads, etc. The requesting department should submit a
written request along with a description of duties for the
temporary assignment to the Department of Human Resources.
The Department of Human Resources provides assistance in
securing temporary labor through the existing applicant pool. In
the event that a temporary request is difficult to fill in a
timely manner, the Department of Human resources will contact a
private temporary agency who immediately will identify qualified
candidates. The temporary employee is hired at the requesting
department's expense. It is advised that the requesting
department allow the Department of Human Resources to coordinate
this effort.
Normally a temporary employee is appointed for a period of six
months or less by the University. Extensions of employment
beyond the initial period are subject to advance approval by the
Department of Human Resources and may be approved up to twelve
consecutive months. An extension request should be made well in
advance in order to prevent work disruption and to allow
sufficient processing time.
The Department of Human Resources will verify the identity and
eligibility of temporary employees for employment by having them
complete the Disclosure and Authorization for Criminal
Conviction Check (HR-ACC) and the Federal I-9 form. Temporary
employees will also be required to complete tax withholding
forms (W-4 and NC-4). The Form I-9 and a copy of the tax
withholding forms will be retained in the Department of Human
Resources; the original tax withholding forms will be forwarded
to the Payroll Office. The hiring department should receive
approval from Human Resources prior to allowing a temporary
employee to begin work.
